Guidance Towards Using Cupping (Hijama) Therapy: A Cure To Diseases

Guidance towards using Hijaamah   (cupping) to cure diseases

Diseases caused by excessive substances are either sanguineous, bilious, phlegm, or melancholic. Curing sanuineous plethora necessitates taking out the blood. If plethora was from the other three types, its cure is in softening the stool as recommended for each disease. (honey as laxative and cupping is used to extort festering blood). Some doctors said that the diseases related to the temperament are either material or non-material and the material ones are either cold, hot, wet, or dry or a combination of these states.

These four conditions which hotness and coldness bring about effects while other two, wetness and dryness, are usually affected. When one of the two effective temperaments is stronger than the other, it is usually accompanied by one of the affected temperaments. Similarly, every type of temperament in the body and other effective substances is of two attributes, effective and affected.

It would be concluded that temperamental disorders are usually caused by whichever effective condition is stronger, hotness or coldness. Hence, the Prophet’s statement draws our attention to the source of diseases. i.e hotness or coldness: For this would bring about removing the harmful substances and relieving the irritated temperament. { if the ailment was hot, the cure necessitates extracting the blood by puncturing the veins or cupping, both of which help extract the septic matter, cooling the temperament.

If the sickness is cold, we should treat it with heat, the remedy provided by taking honey. If curing such illness entails extracting the cold material that has caused the illness, honey also helps in this case because it leads the various substances to saturation along with its other qualities of cleansing, softening, soothing and relieving the affected organs. In this case, the septic material will be gently extracted while saving the body the annoyance of using strong laxatives. Cupping the upper section of the back helps against the aches of the shoulder and the throat. Cupping the two jugular veins is efficient for the sickness of the head, face, teeth, ears, eyes, nose and throat,

Condition: if these illness were caused by excessive presence of blood, septic blood or both of the ingredients  ( tibb Nabawiyy page 69)

Periods best known for coveting cupping

Ibn Majah recorded on the authority of Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) that the messenger of Allah (P.B.U.H) said: “ Let those who intend to have cupping do that on the 17th, 19th, or 21st of the month to prevent the septic blood from causing death to one of you.”

The lesson derived from the hadith maps cupping onto relieving the body from sudden death through the removal of the festering blood though we surely believe that the death of anyone is already pre-destined yet following the footsteps of the prophet to enhance and desire good destiny to continuing worshipping Allah.

In addition to Tibb Al-Nabawiy, Abu Dawud narrated that Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) related that the prophet (p.b.u.h) that he said:” Those who have cupping on the 17th, 19th, or 21st will be cured from every disease”. What is meant by “every disease” mentioned in the hadith is all diseases cause by the blood- related diseases. The ahadith match the opinion adopted by doctors that cupping is prefereed in the later half of the month and the third quarter, rather than the beginning or the end of the month.

Although imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal used to do cupping during any part of the month regardless of time, be it day or night when the septic blood became irritated. To this fact, cupping could be done at any moment when it is necessitated. The author o f the book (AL Qunun)*Ibn Sinai said cupping is preferred during the day, the second or the third hour and evade having cupping agter taking a bath. Yet, when necessary in reference , it s to the one whose blood is thick) one should take a bath then rest for an hour or so and then use cupping.

“cupping is not preferred when the stomach is full, for it might casue various ailments, especially after taking a heavy meal on an empty stomach. Yet if the sickness aggravates, cupping becomes warranteed and needed whatever the circumstances, for the prophet said: “ so that the septic blood does not cause death to one of you”.
